In one of my current fandoms, there's this one male character who is not stereotypcially masculine. He's interested in poetry and art instead of the martial skills he is canonically supposed to be interested in.
Guess who's the token enby headcanon character in that fandom.
And it annoys me because this is exactly the reason why I dislike most ~enby~ and trans headcanons: Instead of saying "this character's gender is valid even though they don't conform to the most basic stereotypical gender roles" it's "this character's interests are not stereotpyically gendered, they must be something ~other~" - and that's exactly the opposite of what people should do to break down gender roles.

NGL that this is why I am very confused by NB/agender etc, because to me it's just saying that traits are inherently masc/fem. I mean at the end of the day it doesn't make a difference to me what you identify as, but I don't get it.

Believing that gender traits *exist* does not mean that you think they're inherent or biologically essential. For example, they could be complex social and intellectual and cultural constructs.

I agree with everything. I also miss the days when crossdressing was a legit thing that characters could do because they LIKED it, and not because they ID as something else than their assigned gender.

I wholeheartedly agree but every time I try to put voice to those thoughts I get jumped on for not respecting people's identities.

Gender-nonconforming people exist, nonbinary people exist, genderqueer people exist. One does not negate the others.

That's not the point. The point is that it's only ever the character who don't adhere 100 % to stereotypical gender roles who are headcanoned as trans or genderqueer and that's an issue that should be adressed. Because it's basically saying "your gender is tied to/determined by your interests" which is fucking bullshit and also edges into "being trans is a choice teehee" territory. Which is pretty damn offensive.

I'm nonbinary, and have 40 years of history getting clocked as queer because I don't always present as properly masculine. GNC -> trans is a trajectory that many of us have gone through, so arguing that we can't headcanon around that reality given the limited language of cinema seems a bit odd.

Especially when fandom doesn't need a reason to drop gay headcanons onto straight media.

Absolutely! I've had this happen in a fandom I got into recently, and I am really not a fan.
