I suspect it's the general idealization of friendship / friends forever! bleeding into fandom friendships. Also at least on some social media, it was referred to as "friending" someone and it was your "friends page." That with feeling like you had to always interact with people on your "friends page" made it seem like they were closer than they actually were. I definitely ran into some drama of exactly this regard before.
