And as a continuation of this thought. I think this is the same reason why there's so little femslash. I'm a woman and it's upsetting how few decent female characters there are in media. Men get to be all fleshed out, but women are shallow love interests. To have TWO fleshed out, interesting female characters in a show is rare. And a canon f/f couple who's interesting is even more rare. The only two I can think of are Willow/Tara (and I didn't like Willow enough to ship them, though I did have a crush on Tara), and Ruby/Sapphire (which has a huge following)

1. this is not at all true, well-written female characters exist and finding them isn't hard.

2. if i can love shitty one-note male side-characters i can also adore shitty one-note female side-characters too. it's a remarkably easy concept.

Different anon but

1) yes but there aren’t as many as male characters. It’s also dependent on what genre you’re into. If you’re into shounen anime you’re pretty shit out of luck finding well written female characters. It’s all about the type of media that appeals to you.

2) you can but it’s harder for some women to do that because a lot of one note female characters are entrenched in misogynistic writing that’s really hard for some women to get over and I don’t blame them. One note male characters usually aren’t a sexy lamp/damsel-in-distress/“the mom” or insert generic stereotypical woman role here.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but don't one-note male characters often come with their own dumb stereotypes?

- brooding villain
- useless/dumb dad
- dumb jock

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but that’s not really problematic or objectifying or reducing them to eye candy the way women have been over generations. I mean it’s shitty but that’s more just generic bad writing rather than women getting hit with bad writing and the uncomfortable subtext of misogyny that still effects women today.

There’s a really good post I saw that explains this. (Note I don’t agree with everything 100% but it makes a lot of sense):

" If you’re into shounen anime you’re pretty shit out of luck finding well written female characters."

Maybe twenty years ago, but there's plenty now

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
hell, even 20 years ago there were still good female characters in shounen stuff.

I like female characters better than male characters and I can't relate to it when people say they can't find female characters they think are worth writing about. Don't misunderstand me - I'm not trying to tell people they should like/ship/write about female characters if they don't want to, or that they owe me an explanation of why. But I don't really relate to it.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
sa.

i really hate it as an argument, and while it may have been more true many years ago it isn't now, and some of the one-note female characters i like are kinda crappy bc the quality of the show is iffy not bc they're written by grossly misogynistic men.

this isn't about who ppl in fandom are writing about, this is me being completely aggravated by an argument that wasn't even that relevant in 2005. if the women in your media are all shitty, then that says something about the kind of media and content creators you're looking for, not that Objectively across the board female character suck. bc they don't, they really don't and i hate that ppl still peddle this completely bullshit argument.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to switch to watching genres I've no interest in just so I can see female characters that aren't kinda crappy. I want the genres I like to start having better female characters. There's no excuse for anything to have only crappy female characters, therefore the onus is on writers, not me or any other consumer.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
What genres are you into that finding well written female characters is so difficult?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
You liking them better doesn't mean they're good characters. It means you have a personal preference for women and will overlook the flaws in their writing because of it. I can at least recognize that the types of characters I like aren't the best characters in terms of writing and don't expect the majority of fandom to share my specific tastes.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you so quick to assume they're not well thought out? There's plenty of well written female characters out there and they're not particularly hard to find. Maybe if you only go for FOTM stuff but even then that's becoming less and less true.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It’s not about that they don’t exist. It’s about the ratio is smaller. When most media still has a cast ration of 1 women to every 2 men (and this is being GENEROUS) of course there’s going to seem like there is less well written female characters in comparison. Most media is dominated by men written for men by men consisting of casts mostly of men. Yeah they’re getting better at female characters but if the ratio is so low you aren’t going to see it as often. Also a well written female character from idk Supergirl has no impact on someone in the SPN fandom where 95% of the women are sex objects.

This isn’t even getting into things like intersectionality when we include race or orientation into sexist stuff.

Like I said, I don't expect the majority of fandom to share my specific tastes.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's true that there is a certain amount of media that just doesn't have multiple female characters who can really be shipped together. So it is somewhat harder.

But it's not anywhere near as bad as what people describe it when they're explaining why they never ship anything f/f. It's not your scene. That's fine.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe finding them isn't hard for the genres you're into, but for me they feel like unicorns. I also don't watch much tv, especially nowadays, so I'm sure I'm missing out on some. Thus my disclaimer in the original post.

My main genre is anime and I feel like there are virtually no good female roles anymore. It's mostly loli-bait moe girls where their dumb helplessness is played up to appeal to older men's fantasies because intelligent adult women are intimidating. Where are the smart, complex women like Alita from Battle Angel Alita? I rarely even see adult women in anime anymore that aren't an extra, a teacher, or someone's mom.

And please, if I'm missing out, I would love recommendations.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
I can't think of many recent anime that center on adults at all, let alone women, so you might be out of luck there. But for recent anime with good teenage female characters, here are a few I liked.

Yona of the Dawn
Snow White with the Red Hair
A Place Further than the Universe: this one also has a couple adult female characters with their own mini-arcs who aren't moms
Carole and Tuesday: currently airing, has fansubs and will be on Netflix in August

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
This is utter bullshit. Sorry, but there is zero lack of decent female characters in media this day, and if you think there is, that speaks to your own ridiculous double standards of what makes for a decent male character as opposed to a female one.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-18 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
Or it's entirely possible we consume totally different media types and genres.

But since you're so certain, then I'd love to be educated. Give me examples in the fantasy and anime genres.
