Re: Have you ever felt represented by a fictional character?

I'm gonna be honest here, I have to admit that I've never understood the whole concept of feeling the need to be represented by a fictional character? Like, to me, the whole fun of fiction in the first place is to be able to explore the stories of characters who aren't like me at all and put myself in their shoes and empathize with them. If I wanted to vicariously experience the stories of people like myself, well, that's what my own real life is for. I want to read/watch stuff about pirates and space travelers and magicians and characters who are so very far removed from my own experience. Characters who are too much like me don't interest me at all.

You can still relate to a space traveler, or a magician, or whatnot.

For me, being interested in seeing a character I relate to one way or another is because it often means someone else is experiencing things I’ve felt alone in, or sometimes someone is able to express something I struggle with expressing, or never thought to express the way they do. Or sometimes if they’re in a fantastic setting, it’s kind of confirming that a character like me “can exist” there, if there’s a common trait or two that’s not often represented in those settings.

It’s not something that’s a must-have for me, but it’s just, when it happens - hey! I get that character!

It probably depends on whether mainstream media has a 100-year history of treating you like shit, and gives you a good movie or series every three years or so today.
