I... I hate to break it to you, but as someone who has been in fandom for 25+ years... OC work has always been hated by the majority of fandom space.

The long tradition of RPGs and extended universe sourcebooks argue otherwise.

I mean, OCs have always had their place in fandom, don't get me wrong. But they've always been a section of a fandom, not a majority of it. I can't think of a single fandom where the majority of the people in the fandom were all aboard the OC train.

D&D? MMO RP servers? Or how a good chunk of Trek and SW fandom has been organized around expanded universe rp?

It's really weird to me that you can do lore-breaking AUs and mashups but not lore-compliant expanded universe or gamefic.

DA

I'm into D&D and MMO RP servers, and can tell you the OC RP ones are pretty small niches of overall online fandom compared to massive juggernaut shipping fandoms. Yes, many people like D&D and MMO RP servers and OC RP. Many many people.

There are just so many OTHER people in the colossus that is online fandom that don't like them at all.

There are organized RPs of Harry Potter OCs too, that doesn't mean that overall HP fandom is like yay OCs. They're not. The majority of fandom is interested in canon characters, even if AU or doing EU things.

I like OCs, but in terms of internet fandom, they have their niches. I enjoy those niches. But I don't pretend like the majority of fandom, even within those niche fandoms, would love all OCs or even get how good OCs or collaborative storytelling are supposed to work. Or else we wouldn't have so many terrible ones. Even D&D and MMO RP fandoms designed specifically for OCs, everybody complains about half of the players rolling murderhobos or waify sexpot elven princesses, 'cause most people suck at OCs.

Niche acceptance exists =/= majority accepted

Which is fine. Going out of your way to hate on extended universe rp and fic, less so.

And lol that shipping isn't loaded with bad characters with thin links to canon.

I'm making no claims on what's better or worse.

Only that it's been a long established thing that most of fandom hates OCs.

This isn't a great thing. It's just not a recent thing.
