122. If the video consisted of him fixing a truck with a guy and not actually getting anywhere close to him, and it "doesn't mean anything," and he actually doesn't discover any more "feelings" and just goes back to his girlfriend in the end, yeah, it would STILL be a stupid and offensive song. And, for the record? Cobra Starship released a song called "I Kissed a Boy (http://www.metrolyrics.com/i-kissed-a-boy-lyrics-cobra-starship.html)," and I thought it was impossible for anyone to make a song more offensive than Katy Perry's, but they managed.

Most good slash, ime, is written by people who actually have some clue, rather than by ex-gospel singers who are just trying to rebel against mommy and daddy in any ~edgy~ way they can.

[identity profile] obtains.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Cobra Starship is known to make fun of a few popular pop songs. TBH, I think that song isn't meant to be offensive, but to make fun of I Kissed a Girl because of the whole "attention whoring."

But it's not just something ~edgy. Girls actually do that at parties sometimes. And that's why I can't hate it myself and kind of agree with OP. Its not offensive because it really just reminds me of what DOES happen at some parties when chicks start making out for male attention.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, why the fuck does the fact that something happens make it unoffensive?

[identity profile] obtains.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
not saying it can't anon. But I don't think she's going "lolololol gay people. So Stupid C:" she's just singing about something that does happen. I'd be more upset about the bitches who actually do do that shit at parties.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, her lolol gay people song would be "Ur so gay", if you wanna check it out.

No one finds it offensive because they think she's taking the piss out of homosexuality. She's trivializing things though, she's treating f/f stuff as a game, she thinks it's perfectly valid to treat another girl a game because hey, it's only gay stuff, right? And better hope her boyfriend isn't pissed. By the way, *why* won't her boyfriend be pissed? Oh, right, because it's hot but meaningless, because women are purely sexualised. Doesn't matter that she kissed someone else, 'cause it's just a girl.

And finally, "It's not what good girls do." Thanks for that judgment Katy, but I'm actually delightful.

[identity profile] obtains.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps i don't find it offensive because this sort of thing doesn't just happen with Katy Perry? After all, "Ur So Gay" is just stereotyping what a gay person acts like. Should be offensive, but a lot of people make stereotypes, therefor I have kind of stopped caring about such stereotyping because then I'd be pissed at a lot of things.

I don't know what her complete view of writing/performing this song iiiis, but I just can't find something offensive if there are a lot wore things she could be doing. It's just a huge thing of stereotypes and what a few straight chicks at parties do/think (or at least from my experience with a lot fo the "party" girls I unfortunately know). I brush it off.

Wow, that's special

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, you have a really excellent perspective on life. Now I don't have to care about racism or sexism! 'Cause everyone does it. All those homeless people? Fuck it, they're everywhere. If it's common, who gives a fuck and why try to change it?

iffin' you say so

[identity profile] obtains.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, and anon doesn't know how to take things that are stupid as just that. Stupid.

I'm sorry that you know, people go around making sexist and racist jokes out of jest. Because lol obviously we don't all do it every once in a while.

I forgot that some of us have a very high horse and therefor feel the need to tell everyone that "LOL UR DOIN IT WRONG" because they have a different opinion and don't find the same things offensive.

Re: iffin' you say so

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Because lol obviously we don't all do it every once in a while.

While it may help your conscience to think that, some of us really don't.

It isn't a high horse to think that racism, sexism and homophobia are always wrong (and by the way, "It's just a joke" has got to be the oldest defense in existence). Hell, if it *is* a high horse, I'm gonna keep riding it because I sure as hell wouldn't want to be down there with people who hold opinions like yours.

Re: iffin' you say so

[identity profile] obtains.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you must be very high strung. Think of all the comments you must hear and all the people you must hate.

I never said such things were okay, but songs like that sung by pop stars, and other such people are the least of anyone's worries. People burn and ban books because they're wrong to some group of people, while others are completely fine with it. There is no black and white to this sort of topic so it seems stupid to be completely against it or completely for it.

Jokes can be taken too far, but so can all the bull headed people who think that such subjects don't have fine lines to cross.

Re: iffin' you say so

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It is so incredibly high strung not to hold prejudices. Media reflects society; it is our worry. Or my worry anyway, clearly you don't give a fuck.

It is really, really black and white. Racism, sexism, homophobia, ablism - these things are not okay. They are never okay. As Jimmy Pineapple would say: Case. Fucking. Closed.

Re: iffin' you say so

[identity profile] obtains.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Joking about things ≠ prejudice, sad to say. So does that make it acceptable if you are in fact gay or black or whatever and you make a joke about yourself?

To be honest, anon likes to get strung up and put words in my mouth. Because I don't respond as angrily to bad jokes, or silly little things like that, that must mean I am instantly racist and sexist.

If you say so, anon.

Re: iffin' you say so

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Indded, joking about things does not indicate prejudice and well-crafted, intelligent jokes can be made about any subject.

But, so you don't accuse me of putting words in your mouth, YOUR words:

I'm sorry that you know, people go around making sexist and racist jokes out of jest.

Sexist jokes. Racist jokes. Not jokes about gender or race, but jokes that are sexist or racist. There is a huge difference. That line you were talking about? It is crossed the second something becomes sexist or racist. Clearly though, you disagree. A little bit of racism is okay if it makes you giggle, right?

Btw, while you are not responding angrily, please do not fool yourself into thinking that your passive aggression is well hidden.

Re: iffin' you say so

[identity profile] obtains.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought that said jokes were instantly deemed sexist or racist. Perhaps I am wrong to label them that way as you said. But I still don't understand why this argument is going on, especially since I don't find the same things offensive as you. Making someone giggle because ti is a stereotype on someone else does not equal OMG SO RACIST. People laugh at their own insecurities to get over them. I think a lot of jokes about race or sex are just to laugh at something that was believed at one point or another to be universally true. That doesn't mean it is true, just believed to be.

And just so you know, I do understand I'm being passive aggressive. Never said I wasn't.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_nanimo/ 2008-10-05 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agree with this.

I will say the song is catchy, though.

[identity profile] avidlydelicious.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed so hardcore, anon.

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I've heard many of their other songs. I didn't take the lyrics to be making fun of it, but I guess I can see how someone would think it is.

Its not offensive because it really just reminds me of what DOES happen at some parties when chicks start making out for male attention.

No one ever said it didn't happen. But it is stupid, and singing a song about it is just as exploitative, the lyrics are still just as offensive, and people shouldn't be praising her for being so pro-gay, because the song isn't.

[identity profile] obtains.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha I obviously don't call her "pro gay"

I dunno. I'm not saying that people can't take offense or have to liek the song because that's dumb. I'm more interested in other people's opinions because I myself don't find it to be all that offensive.

Re: 122

[identity profile] kiwi-from-hell.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, that is really offensive. Bad form, Cobra Starship.

[Goes to youtube] A band called Temposhark covered I Kissed a Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D17J4-EncIc), all lyrics the same, and if nothing else I recommend this to people because the song is annoyingly catchy so it's nice to be able to listen to it being sung by someone with a pleasant voice.

So there, just for comparison, I Kissed a Girl as sung from the perspective of a gay man. Make what you will of hypocrisy and such.

Re: 122

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's impossible for me to enjoy the song no matter who sings it, but you're right, it is at least much more pleasant sounding.

Personally, I prefer this version of "I Kissed a Girl":

:)

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone who likes Katy Perry's song should be forced to listen to Jill Sobule's, because there is no comparison.
