Oh yeah, and 116

Oh, honey, one day you're gonna wake up and you'll be 30 too, just like everyone else does eventually, and you'll realize that it's not OMGYUCKYOLD and that you don't magically lose interest in every one of your hobbies at a certain age. Until then, stop making yourself look silly.

*Nods* I always wonder when "too old" is "too old" for some people. Because that's extremely subjective and would change based on each individual. It could well be that the OP's age is already "too old" according to someone else's standards!

Anyway...I also wonder how that would work in practical terms: do you wake up one morning and decide that "that's it, I've reached the target age. From now on, I'm going to stop watching anime or read manga or listen to what I'm usually listening to, or at the very least I'm gonna stop checking out comms and not participate in fandom anymore, because the opinion of an older fan is creepy".

There may not be many olders fans online right now (though I suspect many more are lurking), and yes, when you have to worry about houses, work, husband/wife/partner, or kids (if any) etc. you probably have less time, but mainly, the "older fans" of ten twenty years ago? Simply not used to the same tools we use now.
Ten, twenty years ago, Internet access was much more limited then, and if you had it, it was likely dial-up. Not great to get fansubs, or access comms like F!S with plenty of pictures. And comms as we know them were not as established then, lj didn't exist etc. So older fans simply didn't have the reflex of checking fandom online.
But we do now. And in ten, twenty years? We still will, I bet. Interests just don't suddenly vanish.

The reason I'm saying this, is because I wonder how much this attitude is based on the current fandom situation and average age right now. But if "older fans" become more common place in the future, would the overall attitude in fandom change?

The only thing I've stopped doing specifically based on age has been trading my glittery accessories/makeup for matte colors and retiring my Happy Bunny and "Muggle" T-shirts. Everything else that I'm not doing (or not doing much of) these days is because one way or another, I've lost interest.

WTF is with 30 being a magic transition anyway? Is it something to do with the huge campaigns to get women through with childbearing before then? And if so, shouldn't there be an allowance for a "renaissance" of your interests AFTER your kids aren't running you quite so ragged?

When I was about 20 and still obsessed with metal music and going to gigs, my mother made a habit of telling me to grow up. I pointed out that one of the people I meet frequently on the gigs is 38 years old, married and a mother of two teenagers. She just didn't get it.

I'm less obsessed with metal now (meaning that I also listen to Japanese pop etc) and have less money for gigs, but I still go whenever I can and have the time. I expect to do so after I hit the big 30 as well. Which, by the way, is in a year and a half.
