There's something strange about women over 30 having a hobby? How? Is this a new rule that I missed much like the wave of hockey love that Sarah Palin thinks has spread hither across these fruited plains? Am I supposed to stop writing about hot boys fucking each other and take up knitting now like all the other old hags?

Actually, looking back I just sounded like an asshole. I guess I'm just so young myself and when I imagine people over thirty in fandom I think of my mother and aunts and...let's just say they're not the best example.

I apologize, really, I was just being snobby. It's mostly because I've always perceived it as a hobby for younger people, but I know that's not true. D:

Thanks and I can understand not wanting to imagine your Mom writing porn. For the record, though? I have a twelve-year old son who probably doesn't like to imagine me writing porn (and I srsly hope he doesn't imagine it cuz...yeah) but I don't think being 30 (exactly 30, actually) means I should stop enjoying fandom and find a grown-up hobby.

That's like saying I should stop working out or going to school or having sex because people under 30 enjoy those things. It's just...silly, to me. 30 brings experience and confidence and the cred to start calling people "whippersnapper" which, let's be honest, friggin' rocks.

From an almost-30 writer of original and fan fiction - thanks for the clarification.

Ideas for stories don't stop showing up once you hit a certain age. Some happen to be inspired by pre-existing characters, settings, or history. If a concept appeals to me and I can develop it in an interesting way, I'm not going to let it go to waste just because it came from some book or game canon.

There's a sizable body of published work that qualifies as fan fiction, such as official Star Wars novels and Jane Austen classics rewritten from some other character's point of view. I would guess that most of it was written by adults.

I imagine the Secret OP thinks 30 is OMG OLD, much like I did from the tender vantage point of 15 and so therefore old dried up pruney women (like that math teacher all the boys stare at and her one aunt whose secret stash of sex toys, porn, and condoms has convinced the OP that old ladies are also crazy and imagine themselves as sexual beings when everyone knows your girl bits actually FALL OFF on your 30th birthday) should stop pretending they have something to offer society and just take their Miss Havisham-like selves away from the sight of decent teenage fans and rusticate gracefully with their adult hobbies like scrapbooking.

Or, yanno, whatever.
