It's because it wasn't an arguement.

Sorry, statement, line of thinking, whatever you want to call it. Stop being so petty.

And you didn't say you thought he was a bad person.

Sorry, I thought it was implied that it was what I thought. I will no preface everything I say with "THIS IS WHAT I THINK:" instead of just stating the thought and expecting people to understand normal human conversation.

Oops, to make more sense of that last sentence, pretend I didn't miss the "w" on the end of "now."

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2008-10-06 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not being any more petty than you.

Actually, in a 'normal human conversation', the way you are saying something is as important as what you're saying. Not, the 'this is what I think' isn't implied in every conversation you ever have. Yes, you should say it if you expect people to take it that way, especially on the Internet.

I'm not being any more petty than you.

LOL. Case in point.

Yes, you should say it if you expect people to take it that way, especially on the Internet.

Sorry, that's just idiotic. Do you have any idea how irritating that would be if every person's opinion was prefaced by "THIS IS WHAT I THINK PLEASE DO NO ASSUME THAT I AM PUTTING THIS FORTH AS A UNIVERSAL TRUTH"...?

Re: 110

Huh. Well, yeah,in a real life conversation. But here, it would make things like... this tread happens less often. Just take into consideration that on the Internet, communication is not the same as in person. There are people from all sorts of different cultures and upbringing. You can't see anyone's face of hear their tone of voice. It's easier for misunderstandings to happen. You can't take anything as 'implied'. You just have to make a a bit more efforts to be perfectly clear, or you risk people jumping on you for stupid things.

In your own journal, then it's fine, but in a community like this one, things are a bit different.

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2008-10-06 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
No. It would be annoying on the internet, too.

Re: 110

Disclaimers are annoying as well - does that mean we should forget about them and risk getting sued by oversensitive copyright owners?

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2008-10-06 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Being cautious when legal issues are involved is not comparable to being repetitive because some people are idiots and can't understand normal discussion without explicit explanation of EVERYTHING.

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2008-10-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
No. You're very dim. No one is going to hold your hand, if you can't understand nuance.

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2008-10-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
If being bright is insulting people all the time and then complaining about being misunderstood, well, I'm happy to be 'dim', then.

(But, seriously? I thought we could finally come to a semi-understanding. Doesn't seem like it.)
