Authors are Carol Matas and Perry Nodelman. And there’s a bit more to it, as I’ll detail in a SPOILER..

The villain is the princess, far in the future. The flaws she’s demonstrated over the course of the book are the things that make him evil, and the way he presents himself (including the whole “he” business) comes from her idea of what it would mean to be a leader whom all would obey without question. He inadvertently prevents himself by shocking her with where her path leads.
