Agreed OP. This is one reason why I loved the Ever After movie. The hero turns up to save the damsel in distress, only to find that she's already saved herself!

It's the same with computer games. When I first started playing them there were rarely playable female characters. For years if there was a game with a female character, I would always choose her, and I still do to an extent (just look at my WoW toons. They are pretty much all female, except for the Blood Elf ones XD).
