They could have given them actual, legitimate costumes on par with the traditional stage production and kept the CGI to a minimum. They did it the way it is because it's cheap and requires less effort.

Imagine if the fishman from Shape of Water had been mostly CGI and face capture instead of an actual costume. It would have been horrendous and awful.

I only meant that I had seen several people suggest 'realistic cats' and that didn't exactly seem like it would solve the problem. Like I said, though, I personally found the original costumes exceptionally creepy themselves.
