Someone called me in for a zoning violation because one of my chickens got out, so a code compliance guy is gonna come inspect my coop next week. Which is fine. I’m not sure how or when any of them escaped, since I haven’t had to go hunting for rogue hens for a year and they’re all accounted for, but I’m not super worried about that.

The problem is, my house isn’t to code. It never has been. My dad got it cheap on the condition that he fix all the not to code additions, and was fined $30k by the city for not doing it fast enough, until he finally ripped out the illegal kitchen and poured cement down the drains. Then my parents split and my mom got the house, put the kitchen back, and added a not-to-code bathroom without getting permits, because my parents believed that everything could be made of spit, spackle, and duct tape.

Then my mom died, and I got her not-to-code, in-desperate-need-of-repair house. I don’t have enough money to do needed repairs, nevermind pay someone to rip out the bathroom addition.

I’m panicking, so I’m gonna use some of the hamster-wheel panic energy to clean house and scrub the chicken coop, but idk what to do. I barely make enough to keep the lights on. I’m also kind of a hoarder, but luckily only kind of and can get the house clean before the inspector gets here, because, sigh, I’d taken some time off for what was gonna be a vacation.

But I can throw out all the carefully scrubbed jam jars in the world, but it won’t let me magically hide an extra bathroom.

Maybe the inspector will just want to see the coop? Hopefully! Keep the bathroom door shut and don't obstruct but don't volunteer information, either, or volunteer to show the inspector anything that they don't ask to see.

Technically, if you don't know about the infractions they might only give you a warning or less, if they look? It seemed like it happened a long time ago, so even though the house was in your family that doesn't necessarily mean you know all the renovations that went in it.

I doubt they'll look at more than the coop, since they've got other jobs to go to they're not going to inspect more than they need to. Just act normal, make things look as nice as possible, you'll be fine!
