Yeah, I never make that sort of statement (publicly) unless I'm ASKED point blank whether I like something or not.

You do you, but it seems really weird to turn any negative opinion whatsoever into some kind of taboo.

I wonder if people do do feel the need to insert themselves just to make that sort of "I personally think it's gross but you do you" statements have ever been on the other side of this sort of thing, and had something they like sniffed at?

Yeah? All the time? Things that are for me aren't for everyone else. That's fine. That's life.

turn any negative opinion whatsoever into some kind of taboo

Oh here we fucking go.

expressing annoyance =/= forbidding people to do something

Why is this so hard for this comm. Why.

That wasn't really my point. Of course they're not forbidding anyone from doing anything. I mean, taboos aren't really built or enforced by going around and explicitly forbidding people from doing something in the first place.

What I meant was, to the extent that anon is scrupulously trying to avoid giving a negative opinion unless expressly invited to do so, they themselves are treating negative opinions as though they're taboo. And I think it's clear - from the rest of their post - that they do think expressing negative opinions unprompted is generally bad, and should be avoided.

What I had meant was that to me making such comments in a general discussion is different than making them in a "squee thread."

Except it's more like, what do you gain by walking in a library and telling everyone there that reading sucks and books are stupid?

If it's a general discussion that's one thing, but as someone mentioned upthread, it's just as annoying to comment on a 'like' thread that you dislike something, as it is to comment on a 'dislike' thread that people are wrong and here's why.

AYRT

What I meant (but didn't say all that well I guess) is that I wonder if people who feel the need to come in and piss in a corner at a squee party are doing it because someone rained on THEIR parade at some point?

(It's why I don't make "Ew Gross but Kinktomato" statements in other people's Happy Places,, because I know how shitty I feel when people come in and make those type of comments in mine.)
