There would also be massive wank by conflicts among the fans who idolized him and refused to believe that he wasn't an arrogant asshole, the fans who knew that he was an arrogant asshole but still thought he was pretty and fun to watch (and, really--Edwin was the talented one, he was the pretty one), and people who just plain hated him.
It might look a lot like Supernatural fandom, actually. Hmmm.

The short answer is "sort of." He came from a family of famous actors with a distinct Shakespearean bent and went onto the stage like his father and brother. He himself got mixed reviews--he wasn't bad, but like a lot of actors today, he was appreciated as much for his good looks as his acting, and some critics questioned his actual skills. What's not so much in question is that his brother Edwin was the real gem of talent in the family; he's still regarded as an amazing actor, and there's an Edwin Booth Theatre in NYC.

Although while I admit that Edwin was more talented, I think John must've had some skill, too, obviously his being attractive helped him, but he also got some scathing reviews in spite of his good looks early on in his career, and I think he must've gotten fairly good eventually because else why should the reviewers change their minds?
