I always got the impression the fandom was up in arms about how little Barb was missed/mentioned and they assumed it was because she wasn't attractive. I thought they related to her because she was average looking and bookish.

That, and also because she's distinctly not comfortable with the popular kids, other than Nancy.

She looks like a generic-brand Molly Ringwald in fashionable (for the time)clothing and the only sign that she's bookish is that she's got those oversized plastic frame glasses that every near-sighted person wore in the mid-80s. It's not like she ought to be wandering around with a bag over her head. She's unkind in almost every scene she's in. I'd have guessed that's why no one missed her versus her not being hot enough.
