I just checked Wikipedia and, keeping in mind that I don't know anything about the old canon other than what is explained in the new series, 5 of the 9 main characters are from the old canon, but they all have plotlines involving the new characters. The recurring cast seems almost entirely original to the new series.
I did feel that it was largely new material (or at least integrated in such a way that no previous knowledge was necessary). To be fair, the first episode (like the trailers) puts a lot of focus on Mary Ann and her return to Barbary Lane, which has probably a big emotional impact when you're a fan of the original canon but left me sort of meh. Personally, the other characters and their relationships were interesting enough that I kept watching and the show does move on from that.
