I'd love to read original books instead of fanfiction if I could consistently and easily find original writing that satisfied what I'm looking for in terms of characters and dynamics. And also was cheap / free, and easy to try stories to figure out whether I actually like them.

I want to clarify - I do read original books, in addition to fanfic, but they satisfy very different parts of my taste. What I mean is that I would love to read original fiction that satisfied the fanfiction-y parts of my taste if I could find them.

Same.

I mean, libraries help, but sometimes I just want some good ol' porn included in my exciting, plotty story. You don't find that too much in most original works. Also, I like the ease of searching tags on fanfic. I'd love something similar for original fiction.

Yeah totally, I agree with all of this.

I think the other thing is, I like romance stories and plotlines *a lot* but most stories that are written around romance have characters that I can't really get into or enjoy.
