I feel very much the same way, to be honest. It's not entirely about quality of the writing, it's just that most fanfic is very ship-focused and I'm not really interested in that. I'm also not interested in fics that are deep explorations of the character dynamic unless there's also a substantial plot to accompany it. Even then... well, frankly a lot of fic writers tend to err on the side of emo navel gazing for my taste.

Now if there's a well written Sherlock Holmes/Law and Order/Criminal Minds casefic, I'm on it!
