I don't think I've ever struggled to find queer-friendly books (especially once I knew that's what I wanted to look for) or books that are cheap/free (used bookstores are my jam; I made quests out of finding whole series over many visits). I've also never had trouble relating to new characters or connecting with new worlds.

On the contrary, I find it very hard to slog through pages and pages of mediocre or outright bad fanfic in hopes I'll find one magical one that suits me.

I understand different strokes for different folks, don't get me wrong, but I grow weary of the overwhelming stance that books are bad and inaccessible compared to perfectly catered fanfic. (Bonus: I think it's a bit telling when someone only wants to read things they already like.)

Books are awesome, but i'm on a super-limited budge, have a teeny tiny library that struggles to do the inter-library loan thing, and have no bookstore within 100 miles of me.

So - yeah, kinda inaccessible. I'm glad you find what you want/like, but it's not always that easy.

If you have any queer-friendly sci-fi recs, have at it!

(Everybody reads things they already like - that's why people like a genre, like sci-fi, but may don't like another, like westerns or true crime....)

It's not much but Tor.com has a free monthly ebook if you're willing to get on their mailing list.

They come in EPUB format for the iBook software, and MOBI format for the kindle software.

I don't have a kindle or an iPhone, so...thanks, but i don't guess that would work.

FBReader and Calibre are cross-platform ebook reading apps.

EPUBReader is a plugin for firefox and chrome.

There are a number of free ebook readers (Calibre is one) that can read MOBI files.

Lightspeed and Strange Horizons do a good quantity of queer SFF on the web. You might like The Vela and Born to the Blade on serialbox. For books, Gladstone's good if you're into alternate fantasy, also JY Yang and Aliette de Bodard. If you can read on a computer or phone there's ebook software and tons of free stuff rolling out every month. Humble Bundle and Story Bundle regularly do LGBTQ book deals.

I'll check those recs, thanks!
I don't want to read romance, or YA, or crime, or horror stuff of any kind, mostly just sci-fi and fantasy. It'd be great to find new authors who write good stories in those genres, so - fingers crossed!

Um - is there more to the Lightspeed name? I googled it and am seeing POS software, stock options/venture trading, and aviation, but nothing about ebooks....

Same with Gladstone - getting a city in MO, and MI, and a prime minister, but no books....

Tor.com also regularly publishes fiction on their website.

You can sometimes get audiobooks through overdraft as well!

As for queer SF, Yoon Ha Lee's Machineries of Empire is fantastic. Weird, but fantastic.

I'm also on a limited budget (and grew up in a small town without many resources)--I buy a book maybe once a month, but it's something I love so I keep doing it.

A Long Way To A Small Angry Planet has been making the rounds for a while now and while it wasn't my favorite thing (a bit too soft for my tastes), I absolutely recommend it. There are two sequels now I think.
I also really enjoyed Edge of the Abyss and its sequel The Abyss Surrounds Us--if a bisexual kaiju trainer being kidnapped by a lesbian pirate appeals to you at all.
