She's not. I know this fandom is a paranoid mess in the best of times, but this issue was settled (by Rey herself) in TLJ.

Didn't somebody say something about how they might retcon it in 9?

I'm sure all the click-bait regulars have used a supposed parentage reversal to their advantage. But no one associated with TRoS has said that.

JJ Abrams has gone on the record saying he's throwing out Rian Johnson's 'they were nothing scavengers' plot point and retconning the story to his own vision. So... nothing that happened in TLJ might stand in TRoS

How did you get that from what Abrams actually said? Which was: "I don’t want to say that what happens in Episode 8 [didn’t happen]. We have honored that. But I will say that there’s more to the story than you’ve seen.”

NAYRT

"throwing out" is a little strong, maybe, but it's pretty clearly saying that they're going to retcon it.

Expanding upon the story isn't retconning.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-31 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible to expand on the story without fundamentally changing the nature of it. Absolutely. But it's also the case that you can keep the details of a story technically true, while changing it enough that the fundamental nature of the story changes. It's something that's literally happened before with a major reveal in Star Wars. And obviously we won't know until release but it definitely doesn't sound like JJ is planning to add a few details to essentially the same narrative.

I'm confused as to why you think "honoring" Rey's admittance in TRoS would mean a retcon. My favorite theory about why Rey's dirtbag parents left her on Jakku was that they were scared of her. And Rey somehow blew up their ship in her distress, then couldn't deal with that fact and lied to herself for years about how they were coming back out of sheer self-preservation. It fits with what we know and is an expansion on that, but adding something like this to the story would not be a retcon.

I agree that it's possible for them to add onto the story without it being a retcon. It could certainly happen that way!

I think my concern is partly that the way that the way that the Abrams quote is framed doesn't really sound like that's what he has in mind. Like, if you were just going back and adding more specific details to what was in TLJ, why would you say that, in that way? Why would you say anything at all about honoring or expanding on the story? You'd just go and tell the story. The fact that he's calling it out makes me think that the change is going to be substantial. And then "honoring" the story in TLJ is such an obvious weasel word - it would be so easy to technically "honor" what was said in TLJ while actually completely changing the important consequences of it. So when you put those things together, it fills me with unease.

No, it wasn't. KR was trying to make her feel like she was alone and he was the only one who ~*understood*~ to seduce her to the dark side, and she confessed what she suspected was the case, not what she knew was the case. Are we really going to take KR's word for this? Or blindly accept Rey's worst fears?

I'm not saying she is or she isn't related to someone special. I'm just tired of people saying TLJ definitively answered this question.
