For fanfic writing purposes, I like closed canons. It gives more freedom to write.

Ditto. You don't have to worry about being canon compliant, or future seasons contradicting you... your fics don't end up sounding dated or needing clarification that it's based on events through season 4 only, etc. etc. It's just tidier and easier.
