119. FERN GULLY. FJKHSDFJHDSGKLDFHDFGH.

163. I always got the impression that the women were killed off because a large proportion of the fans didn't like them. Which sucks, because Ruby and Bela were amazing.

Well, Ruby was great. I'm pretty convinced the writers screwed up Bela all on their own. I haven't really forgiven them for that.

I'm curious, howso do you think they screwed her up? I quite liked her character/story overall...

I loved her in "Bad Day at Black Rock" -- she seemed smart, tough, and unrepentant. She outsmarted the boys, but also got outsmarted by them on occasion. Then we had "Red Sky at Morning," and they somehow had to make the boys -- well, Dean in particular -- much more crass and stupid in order to highlight her cleverness. I just think that's a pretty sexist move on the part of the writers. Have them be smart, and just make her smarter -- how hard is that? It was really problematically classed, too -- apparently, they played up Dean's crassness to show the contrast between her upper-classness and his blue-collarness.

And finally, they made her a victim, which I could go on and on about, but won't.

Except, of course, for the bit where she become Hell Hound food, haha.

If you hunt down video of the 2008 Comic Con Panel, Eric has even said that the writing team failed with Bela. It was kind of hard to watch, as Sera got all awkward for the rest of the panel after that.

Ouch. I agree that they failed, but I also think he needs to support his writers in public. Did he take some personal responsibility for that, or just pass the buck? Because even if it was the fault of others, I still think he needs to stand by them and take the blame. It's kinda his job.

He used the word 'we' a few times, but the general tone was that it wasn't him. I don't know if that's because he was avoiding blame, or if it's because he writes less for the show that the fans think. And yeah, I agree that you don't put your writers down like that in public. But I wanted to share.

I can see that it would be hard -- he gets blamed for everything, and I think the impulse must be there to say, "It wasn't me!" Still, it's part of his role. And I feel bad for Sera. Even if she did write the awful "The Kids are Alright" episode. Yuck.

"Officially," Katie Cassidy's version of Ruby was killed off due to budget cuts.

I don't know that it warrants quotes there though because I do think the official reason is true. We still have Ruby around so it's not like they were getting rid of the character or making her male or something so it's not about the fact that she's a female character. (Personally I much more preferred the old actress over this new one.)
