163. I'm glad you were vindicated; the people who say, "It's just a show, it doesn't have to worry about being all 'PC'" are either ignorant or afraid of the truth. I love SPN, but sometimes that love is strained. It's like hearing a grandparent say something overtly racist; you hope it's because they don't know any better but you know that they actually should.

It's sort of gone from B-Horror-misogyny to sexploitation-blatant.

163. I dunno why people hate Supernatural so much. And I'm not saying this to bug you, because I hear praise from my best friend constantly and it's getting old. I'd like to hear some criticism once in awhile, so if you could help me figure out why people hate it, I'd at least be able to understand better. =)

Not the person you were asking, just a random passerby, but it's cheesy, the characters don't really grow, the plots are cliched even when they're trying to be fresh and new, there are plot holes you could drive a mack truck through, and the writers like to have the female characters either die horribly or disappear with no resolution.

While the rest is true, I have to disagree with your "the characters don't really grow" summation. They do. That's actually the thing that keeps me coming back to the show time after time. A little example, first season Dean would never have admitted his dad was a total bastard like third season Dean did.

I do understand disliking the show, especially for the reasons you listed above. I love the characters, and not just the boys. Even with her eventual fate, season 3 is a treat for Bela alone.

I loved Bela, which is why her final episode made me want to punch my TV. >:(

Same here. Honestly, and I'd post this on fandom_secrets except I don't keep it that secret *lol*, I'm still in mourning over her. I enjoy the boys enough that I like the series as it continues past her, but any respect I had for Kripke and his writerly bunch is just gone.

163. Oh, I don't hate SPN. I said above, I actually quite love the show. I just have issues with some of their social portrayals. For example, if a black man appears in an episode, you know he's going to be evil and/or stupid. The only exception was near the end of last season when a previous evil/stupid black man was shown the errors of his ways and turned truly awesome; of course, he was then killed at the end of that episode. Maybe TPTB aren't being racist on purpose, but you'd think they'd at least notice there was a little issue there. As for the treatment of women, yes, there are multiple damsels in distress, enough that whenever a woman-of-the-episode actually does something proactive it comes as a bit of a shock. Part of me accepts that as necessary for the horror trope. What I can't accept is that whenever a good female character is brought into the show as a reoccurring character, she inevitably is booted off or killed. This I blame the fandom mostly for. It seems that whenever a woman comes onto the screen and doesn't need the boys to save her all the time, the noisier wings of fandom rise up in a shrill cry of dismay and make TPTB get rid of her. But again, you'd think the creators of the show would have enough integrity not to listen.

Yes, that's why I asked you... because I noticed that you didn't hate the show. ^_^

But yeah, I've noticed that too. To put it in easier terms, the show can come off as racist or sexist to some viewers. They may not mean it, but sometimes it can get a bit annoying. =/
