No offense, but it is really hard to be like, OH WOW, KINGDOM HEARTS AND TSUBASA ARE THE SAME.

For one thing, they are both exactly the same thing--fanservice. For Kingdom Hearts, it's the ability to play through Disney movies with a side of the Final Fantasy characters we know and love.

For Tsubasa, it's exactly the same thing, except for with CLAMP characters, and a lot of these things are very emotional (Sorata and Arashi is probably the most prominent example of this in the early volumes, together and happy). I know it's kind of emotional for a lot of fans of X, knowing what happened to both of them at the end of the series.

I mean, you know they aren't the same characters, really, but it's still really satisfying.

I think that Tsubasa can only really be satisfying if you're a CLAMP fan. It has merits on its own certainly, but the big drive comes from seeing these characters that many people know and love.

Also, a lot of people seem to hate on CLAMP's later artwork, but I don't get it. Their composition is pretty amazing, if exaggerated. I mean, Nomura has his share of design issues.

When I actually started reading Tsubasa, I was pretty unread in CLAMP series. I had read Tokyo Babylon and was reading xxxHOLiC, and that's about it. I was very unfamiliar with both X and Cardcaptor Sakura (and to a large extent I still am) and so a lot of things were lost on me. I was only following it along to keep up with the shared storyline in xxxHOLiC ... until the Acid Tokyo arc (which I almost didn't get too, because that awful storyline with the hovercraft racing almost killed me it was so boring). Then I became a real fan, purely on the basis of the awesome character development and plot twists that are contained in that arc.

So, Tsubasa's a slow burner. A lot of it IS fanservice, but there is more to it than that -- it just requires patience.

I think the difference between KH and TRC is that KH isn't as gratuitous about the fanservice. Which is to say, it's all important to the plot, or at least close to important - your companions are Donald and Goofy not to amuse the audience or cause nostalgic throwbacks to Disney - although they are that too - but because in KH world, it's explained and makes sense. I realize I'm not being terribly clear. Whereas your example of TRC's Sorashi... is useless. The only reason it is there is to make people go OMG SORASHI. Or OMG KAMUI (or WTF Kamui, if you're like me and misses Hokuto). Speaking as a Sorata/Arashi fan who still found their cameo jarring and useless.

Basically, KH gives purpose to it's fanservice. TRC just expects you to go OMG FANSERVICE THAT MAKES IT BETTER no questions asked.

Huh, you know I really never thought of it that way!

That makes sense!

(Though some of KH IS just random fanservice, Destiny Islands, for example).

I just wanted to say, I agree with your comment about the artwork. Every time I see someone calling Tsubasa "ugly CLAMP" I get irrationally angry. So it's not their 1980-1990s style, so what? I get mad when people don't have any tolerance for artistic diversity.

Oh, my icon is totally related to this, in a tangential way, because I know for a fact that if they aren't attacking Tsubasa, they're attacking Code Geass...

It really is sad.

I do have to say, the animation for some of Geass is very strange, but I really love the designs. They're so crisp and pretty.

EDIT: And yes, get FF4! The remake is seriously the best version to date, no question. The added plot material alone is worth it.

Oh wow, I am surprised that there are actually people who like their new art--sometimes it seems like the predominant feeling is OMG this SUCKS.

*tear.

believe me I'll take the 'noodle art' over the giant shoulders of DOOM and the ridiculously long eye-lashes any day >_>
