Okay, I may have phrased my comment poorly. But it's completely possible to have an eroticized exchange of power without it being rape (BDSM, for example), and I see non-con as falling directly on the line. As an externalized (in the characters) rape fantasy about being powerless. I think this SHOULD be distinguished in fiction from rape, where the victim responds mentally and emotionally in a realistic way to sexual violation. Unfortunately, I don't make the rules.


And I've seen that theory posited many times, and I continue to think it's largely bullshit intellectualization that minimizes the horror of actual rape by reducing a rapist's motives to something that seems more academic and safe.

"Rape is all about power and control, and has nothing to do with desire," also doesn't jive that well with the views offered by actual rapists when interviewed. This book (http://www.amazon.com/Predators-Pedophiles-Rapists-Other-Offenders/dp/0465071732/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223441058&sr=8-1), if I'm recalling correctly, tears into that neat little theory fairly nicely. Unless it's a different book; but I'm pretty sure it's Predators.


I personally see no difference between non-con and rape, and I believe the non-con label was probably just chosen so they could have a label that didn't have quite the off-putting 'punch' of saying, "I'm into rape!"

You're free to think what you want. I'm free to think you just can't handle the ambiguity of the concept of a rape fantasy story.
