I don't hate the guy, but I don't get why he has to be the prince who was promised. Isn't that Daenerys' fate? I don't get why Sansa should have to repent for anything there, she was even nice to him in his memories. Jon isn't bad, but some of his fans want the world to bow down to him. I don't get it. I think it's petty too.

I actually will be very angry if Dany is the prince who was promised, for multiple reasons -- I've been reading the series feeling like Martin was setting Dany up for a fall for a long time now, and to have her be the prince who was promised and storm into Westeros and win without any sort of fight would not only destroy that concept, but it would also undo everything about ASOIAF that I really love -- the political intrigue, the drama, the hazy motives and themes.

I do think Jon might be the prince who was promised, for a few reasons -- there's something about it in the visions Dany had in ... I think it was ACOK. I haven't read these books in so long. And of course there's the theory that everyone pretty much knows has to be true, which is that Jon is a Targaryen bastard via Lyanna. I don't, however, think that guarantees he'll live. In fact, it probably guarantees he won't.

But all that aside, Jon actually is far from my favorite character. His plot in AGOT was probably his best, and I found his story in both ACOK and ASOS to be rather ... uninteresting compared to what his siblings were up to. I don't hate him either, but I do agree the fandom worship of him is a bit silly. And I think you're probably right on one count -- the fans are probably living out their own vengeance fantasies through him with comments such as wanting him to "make Sansa pay." (Sansa probably was the rudest of the girls in the family, but I don't get it. Robb wasn't exactly a saint to Jon either. In fact, the only Stark we say being consistently good to Jon, besides Ned, was Arya.)

There was a part about salt and rock in the visions which makes me think it isn't Jon. He was born in the Dornish mountains (if The Theory is true) but salt means sea I would think. But it's not so much if Jon is the prince who was promised (because I like the intrigue and moral gray best too and don't care who the prophecy is about as long as it's a good story, it could be Stannis for all I care) as much as it's this entitlement that he MUST be.

Siblings are just NOT saints to each other in real life. I didn't find Robb's relationship to Jon objectionable either. Jon might've been hurt by some of the things he and Sansa said, but from their point of view they didn't understand, they were just children too. I thought the Stark kids came off as a really normal family. Some members are closer to each other because there's so many of them and that's what happens. I didn't think any of his siblings were bad to Jon. What kind of siblings ARE consistently good to each other, outside of the Brady Bunch?

I don't think Sansa was intentionally rude to Jon. She is aware of social standings, I think that's most people in that culture, because of how important inheritances are. It's unfair to single her out, isn't it?

I always hoped that the salt and smoke part meant something about Davos, because I am oddly fond of Davos and having him have a bigger role than expected would be awesome, for some reason.

Yeah, really, I think, once again, the fans are projecting "mean cheerleader" or whoever was rude to them in high school onto Sansa and hoping she "gets what she deserves" because it will vindicate them. It actually has pretty little to do with Jon, himself, which is the whole problem -- Jon wouldn't do that. It's just not like him.

I am fond of Davos as well, I don't find that odd!

Jon coming off so selfless to people is part of why they want everything for him, if you ask me. I know that to some he is conflicted, not selfless, but there's something there that makes people want lots and lots of validation for him. But there's you and people like you who don't, too.
