I liked her because I'm bipolar and because of this I can relate to the character. I think she is the most realistic portrayal of a mental illness in anime, period. So in a way I'm kind of offended when people don't like her. I try not to be, but because my behavior has been similar to Asuka at times (before I was heavily medicated) I take it kind of personally.

that makes sense yeah. it's probably not like i would hate her as a person, but it's really her contribution to the series I like the least. I'm NOT a fan of eva, and I remember thinking "ug, shinji's got it bad enough now we have to watch some girl be a jerk to him too, and another girl just... not do anything?" Having MAIN CHARACTERS seemingly never get along was extremely frustrating. But I never watched more than maybe 10 episodes so... who knows. A "protagonist" that acts all mean, mental illness or not, is kind of hard to LIKE, even if there's an understandable depth to the character.
