Yes. Agreed.

"Oxford comma" for me has become something like "anything but country and rap" for literate people. All you're doing is signaling just what manner of boor you are, and the real rule for writers and editors is Follow the Fucking Style Guide.

For the record, I use serial commas personally because I love them and professionally because it's The Fucking Style Guide. But I've also wasted hours of time fixing serial commas and other niggling details because other people didn't Follow the Fucking Style Guide. Those people didn't get additional contracts.

+1

While the lack of an Oxford comma only trips me up occasionally when reading, especially out loud, the fact that it trips anyone up at all (while use of the Oxford comma never does) is proof enough that it should be used.

It's not a huge deal to me, but it seems silly that anyone is still fighting against it. There's the potential for significant confusion when you don't use it. Using it fixes the problem. So just use it.

"There's the potential for significant confusion when you don't use it. Using it fixes the problem. So just use it."

Comma-optional styles (like Associated Press) privilege clarity. If there's any possibility of confusion you add clarifying punctuation or fix the word order of the sentence (the best solution, even for serial comma styles). Commas have become the penicillin of punctuation, over-prescribed for every sniffling sentence. Sometimes the comma fixes it, sometimes it does nothing but sit there in a bad sentence, and sometimes it creates significant confusion.

Follow the Fucking Style Guide used by the people you're working with. If you don't, you're just expecting other people to fix your problems.
Follow the Fucking Style Guide.
