You could always test the waters by posting the least fucked up story under another name, lol.

As a true fan of fucked-up fic, I wish you the best! Good luck!

Sock it or orphan it?

I say post it.

I don't know what fandom you're in OP but personally speaking as someone who loves reading fic in times like these I'm just not in the mood to deal with toxic relationships or shitty things happening in general. Life is already a mess & I go to fandom things to escape that you know?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
...And? I mean fair enough but you're just one person. Why do you think everyone else should cater solely for you?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The issue isn't that people prefer to read unproblematic fluff. The issue is that a certain number of people among that group has taken to harassing anyone who doesn't write or want to read only unproblematic fluff.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Or even better, people with their heads so far up their ass they think it's the "mature" choice to read unproblematic ships

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That seems fine to me, but I don't think that's what OP is talking about, really. They're not disputing anyone's right or need to consume more positive, escapist media.

create a new pseud not linked to anything else you've posted. disable comments on the fic, or if you really want to leave it open to people who like it to leave a comment, disable notifications and abandon the email. and then post like you've never posted before.

I made the mistake of not moderating comments on a fic for an A/C pairing where A/B is the juggernaut and got so much hate from A/B fans for it that i had to contact the abuse team. some people got banned. now I either moderate or disable comments even though I post under my regular name. if I went way off into left field I'd made a new pseud and keep it unlinked because I feel like the only way to expose present-day fandom to alternate viewpoints and "don't like don't read" is to put it out there, not hide it.

but then like protect yourself, yo, by staying anonymous and not letting people get their chance to hurt you.

sock up and only interact on ao3. i'm very happy this way.

Scared of what, exactly? Turn comments off or screen them if you think people will be shirty but hell - tons of people love angst and fucked up stuff. Post it. Fuck 'em.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I mean yeah, take precautions like creating a new e-mail account AND user account that aren't linked to any active ones, but post it. There's likely more people interested in what OP likes out there.

I don't really even get the point of *these* precautions. Gmail and other mail accounts easily let you designate spam, and you can control comments on all platforms....

I guess it just seems a bit paranoid to me.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
/shrug I suggest it just because a lot of stuff is linked to e-mail accounts these days and so OP doesn't have to go through the trouble of filtering stuff if it all goes pear-shaped.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, I know someone who posted dark as heck fic in a fandom that was simultaneously in love with that stuff and had a large portion that vehemently and sometimes violently went against dark fic.

She screened her comments, but they just got more abusive so she stopped allowing comments. Then she got doxxed and rage quit the fandom (for very understandable reasons). So I have to admit... depending on the fandom, precautions can be necessary.

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Someone in my fandom was doxxed.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who writes darkfic in a fandom that is VERY vocal with hatred for those sorts of tropes... If you're truly worried then have a seperate account for darkfic and be very liberal with blocking people. It's much more enjoyable when you filter out the hate and just have fun (and people who DO read dark stuff are in my experience appreciative of people who post it) <3

(Anonymous) 2019-08-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
just use an anonymous collection to set it as anonymous. If nothing happens you can always deanon really easily. (Just post anonymous and it should come up in the collection part.)

I'll sail along with you, OP. Also just gonna second everyone saying to sock it up (hah!). Ao3 has an option where you can just orphan a fic.

I'm wondering what fandom this is...
As someone who loves reading/writing messed up dark stuff I say go ahead and post, OP. There will def be people out there who will love it! :)

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I miss when people just got to post their fucked up fic because that’s literature not real life, without like posting a rape fic and being accused of being a rape* apologist

*Rape just being an example

(Anonymous) 2019-08-05 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
Post it anyway. Not everyone who reads fic is active in other fandom places. Not everyone only reads fic posted in the last day/week/year. Throw it up on AO3 and your audience will always be able to find it, even years from now.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-11 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Like others have said, create a sock account and post your fic there. There are people out there who definitely would love to read your fic, as fucked up as it might be.
