I don't want to be cynical here, but the 80s and 90s sucked bad dick too, you just don't remember it that way because you were a child and were literally incapable of grasping the enormity of how much politics/war/disease/poverty/etc. sucked. Your parents and teachers and whatnot likely shielded you from some of it too.

It was not a "relatively peaceful" time. Believe it or not, race relations in the US were even worse then than they are now, and person-against-person violence was at an all-time high. And god help you if you were gay, much less trans. We lost almost an entire generation of queer people to AIDS because we were pushed so far down and were refused help on a national level. We played in dirty wars and had just as many homebrewed terrorists as we do now.

I know it's difficult to believe through the absolute shitshow of modern politics and there is some genuinely worrying shit going on right now that could certainly herald a downturn, but statistically speaking, we're living in the most peaceful time we've ever had.
