I took it in high school, and the only thing I remembered was the conjugation rules. I've been taking it for 4 years now. 1-2 lessons a week. Plus watching a lot of Spanish tv, listening to Spanish music, and reading Spanish books. Still having trouble. I spent 2 weeks in Mexico even. It just doesn't come naturally to me.
