"Woke"

(Anonymous) 2019-08-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever met or heard of anyone who you consider truly and completely woke?

If so, who are they?

If not, do you think such a person exists?

On a scale of 0-100%, how woke do you consider yourself?

I don't think anyone is 100% woke. Things change, views change, and there's always room for improvement. Even the most woke person probably has a blind spot.

And honestly, the older I get, I feel the less I know shit. I know that things I was saying 15 years ago make me go "was I fucking drunk?" I'm sure there are things I'll still come at with a blunt hammer of denial while others look on in horror.

I do think there is a difference between being woke and being... stupid-woke, or going for wokeness points. I hope I'm walking the line. I would like to consider myself at least 50% woke. Maybe 60-65 on a good day.

Seconding all of this.

No, at least not vocally.

Probably, but I'm immediately distrustful of people who make it a defining characteristic. It's usually a front for martyr complex or maybe I'm just bitter.

65% probably. More than the average since I'm affected by some relevant issues, have a decent understanding of ones I'm not affected by, and follow politics some, but I do little activism and don't entirely agree the consensus on certain issues.

Whoops, pretend I said savior complex, not martyr complex.

I don't think being completely woke is possible, because these things are expanding all the time. A lot of politically correct opinions in 1999 absolutely are not today, and keeping up with what is an acceptable opinion/vocabulary about every conceivable minority group is a full time job, nevermind that these things are often still debated within the groups they concern.

There are probably people who consider themselves perfectly woke, and who mostly likely haven't lived long enough to experience that yeah, these things change. For that reason, I have no wish to try and guess at how woke I am myself, though going by that probably "ageist" statement I just made, it's presumably less than 100%.

It's not possible to be 100% woke. No matter who you are, there are people out there who you don't understand because their situations and problems are different than yours and there are too many different problems and situations for anyone to understand all of them. It's not possible to have all that knowledge and keep on top of everything. The best anyone can do is be aware of major national/local issues, be aware of very major global issues, treat people kindly, accept that you don't know everything, remember that there are multiple sides to every story, and keep an open mind.

I'd like to think I'm over 50% woke, but given what I just said, I'm sure I'm well below 75%.

The internet has dragged the word "woke" so far from its original meaning...

(I don't even know what it means. Socially aware?)
