I mean, they added CGI cat fur but the concept is basically the same. Humanoid cats.

The main problem I have, and the main complaint I've been seeing, is that nothing has been done to their faces, so the human face is left to float atop the cat head. There is no sense of connection there. I saw an edit where someone added the makeup from the stage version - cat eye eyeliner, cat noses, the line between the nose and the upper lip - and it went a long way to fixing the uncanniness of the faces.
So ultimately, the real problem is that the creators got so caught up in being ✧・゚:*clever*:・゚✧ that they forgot to actually do a good job.

Spaghetti bolognese made by an Italian grandmother and Chef Boyardee spaghetti and meatballs in a can are basically the same concepts...which is not the same as same results.
