Yeah, the first half of the book is kinda hard to get through (I think I only held on for the world building), but once the two POV characters are in the same place (and I ADORE their developing friendship - it's my favorite relationship in the book), the story really gets going.
Like I said, my interpretation might be completely wrong, but I'll desperately hold on to it till the last book comes out.

hm, okay. I'll give it another go. (I did really like it until the djinn suddenly did a 180 in terms of how he interacted with the MC.)
