133) Without going into caveats and whatnot... Yeah, kinda. But stupid, broken people make stupid, broken plans. It all sorta(?) makes sense.

140) Puns are the highest form of humor. ಠ_ಠ

142) Gee, it sure is /a/ in here.

158) That's because LotR characters were pretty much just archetypes. The "hero", the "villain", the "wise wizard", the "loyal knight". It has some interesting characters, but a lot of them are horribly undynamic. And that's alright because you're reading for the epic setting and grandeur of the story.

158. I disagree! Boromir is an awesomely complex character. As are Merry and Pippin, in my opinion. And the other hobbits. And Faramir. And pretty much everyone. What's with nobody liking Tolkien anymore? Is it no longer cool?

Also, they are archetypes because LotR is pretty much a prototype for novel-format fantasy. Sort of the same way that Superman is (now) really boring as a superhero -- because the genre has matured and built from that beginning basis.

It doesn't mean that LotR is bad writing, or no longer worth reading. It just means that it has to be read in a bit of a different light.

I think a lot of the reason people don't get LotR is because they think they are reading a novel.

YOU ARE NOT READING A NOVEL. LotR is a sort of modern take on certain genres of medieval literature ... that's what Tolkien studied. There's complexity to the characters, but they are based on certain roles, and it's more about running themes than the typical plot. It's a different aesthetic. It's more like an Icelandic saga than a novel, with a healthy dose of Victorian fairy tale thrown in.

For what it's worth, I thought JRRT's wit was about five thousand times sharper than JKR's.
