was a shorter way of saying they both believe in the same god. and because they they believe in the same god and share many other beliefs, they are generally grouped together.

The term you are looking for is "Judeo-Christian religions".

Well, no. That's not actually how they are grouped. The Christian and Jewish perceptions of God are not quite the same. While Christianity emerged from Judiasm and shares a large portion of holy texts and thus ideas of God, they have theologically important additional material. Christianity involves the Trinity, leading to the addition of Christ and the Holy Spirit as elements of God. While both faiths base their divine notions on Yahweh as represented in what Christians call the Old Testament, it's incorrect to say that the god they worship is identical. While beliefs and practices are comparable due to shared scripture, there are several important variants in terms of ritual and theology. You will find that the idea of Christ as the last and ultimate sacrifice has led Christian groups to place less emphasis on OT texts and the behavioural codes within. In comparison, adherents of Judiasm have generally maintained the practices of their ancestors. Keeping Kosher laws is an obvious example. While the Christian Bible contains the dietary rules of Leviticus, they are not viewed as a primary teaching by many groups.

Along with Islam, they are grouped as Abrahamic religions.

As one of the other commenters said, they're both Abrahamic religions, n that they both come out of that peculiar middle eastern monotheistic context, but Judaism is hardly "christ-based", seeing as how Christ has nothing to do with the religion. "Monotheistic" is acceptable, as is "Judeo-Christian" or "Abrahamic", but "Christ-based" insinuates something about the religion that does not exist-- namely that it's somehow based on the worship of Jesus Christ.

Sorry, but Christianity (with its trinity and worshiping a man as god) takes it's roots from the monotheistic Judaism, not the other way around. To imply otherwise is insulting.

This was mainly in response to a person who enjoyed a particular slash pairing I wrote, which broke up an established canon marriage, but then went through the rest of my fanfiction and wanked all over my Xena/Ares pieces. I don't think Xena/Gabrielle is a canon pairing, despite the whole soul mate thing. The quotation marks were for that, not for a differentiation between the validity of hetero or homosexual relationships.

i appreciate your distinction there(now that you've explained it). and i respectfully disagree about xena and gabrielle's canon.

we x/g fans tend to be a little rabid. but i'm sure you can see why we would pounce on such a pair of women in a time when there really wasn't much else for us to look to in the media.

but i do agree that it's just as bad to be biased in the way this person was.

but now i'm interested in what the other pairing was and the marriage that was split.

Yeah, I completely understand how Xena/Gabrielle kind of became... hrm, what's the best way to put it - something bigger than just a fandom thing to quite a lot of fans and that's pretty damn awesome - and certainly something most shows can't equal. I just never really felt the pull towards them as a couple myself.

It was actually a Simon/Wash fic (Firefly) that I wrote as a gift for someone's birthday.

Lucy and Renee said they were lovers. The writers said they were lovers. How is that not canon? Sounds like denial.
