Stuff strangely popular on Tumblr

(Anonymous) 2019-08-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Greek mythology. Especially Haides and Persephone. Did the non-Greek Tumblrites all go back to grade school? Why is this an obsession?

Moomins. I'm kinda unsure whether this is an annoying trend. I liked the Moomin books as a kid (I've only seen a few bits of the cartoon on Youtube). They've always been lowkey popular on Tumblr, and it makes sense: they're cute, they've got the cozy/rural aesthetic that's popular in some areas, they fact that there are comic strips means you get funny rebloggable panels. That isn't annoying. But now people keep making awful headcanons and shipping Moomintroll and Snufkin, and... ugh.

URLs that are [some LGBT-related term][some fictional character]. You could make a generator for them. ButchVoldemort. GayFrodoBaggins. LesbianZaphodBeeblebrox. Etc.

The general obsession with calling a character or even real person a 'top' or 'bottom' based on personality traits. It's just Uke/Seme all over again. And it can seem kind of gross and invasive sometimes (when applied to people who aren't fictional or even famous).

Jennifer's Body. That is literally the only place I see people talking about it.

There's a lot of Greek mythology that really wouldn't run with the general tumblr wibe, and Hades/Persephone is just another example, except according to the tumblr fans it's about female emancipation or something?

The Moomins are the it thing RN because there's a new cartoon and I guess a lot of people are just discovering them for the first time, plus the OMGLBGT creator, probably. My ten year old self made jokes about Moomin being gay for Snufkin already in the nineties, but honest shipping of anything there is a level where I'm not prepared to take it.

There's no one "Tumblr vibe" necessarily and Hades/Persephone can be made to fit pretty comfortably into the classic Tall Dark and Evil kind of thing, which has never been exactly unpopular on Tumblr

idk

Uh, someone who actually worships Hades and Persephone here, and the main myth people learn is Demeter's PoV whereas if you learn deeper, Kore (Persephone) was isolated by her mother and realized how miserable she was because Hades was generally nice and apologetic after he stupidly took advice on romance from Zeus.

Persephone ate the pomegranate seeds when she realized she was faced with eternity being stuck in her mother's garden again, alone, like some flower for her mother to look at. So the act of eating the seeds was one of freeing herself. It speaks volumes as to how good together they are that there are maybe a couple of tales of them having marital problems (caused by Zeus being an asshole) compared to numerous other Greek deities.

I love, and believe in Greek Mythology, so I guess I'll second this.
What people get hung up about is that the most popular story of these figures is called the 'rape of Persephone', which is not used by the same definition we use today, for the most part. Persephone represents spring. She comes back from the underworld to bring us springtime, after living as Hades bride during winter. She is life reborn, not life pulled under. It's a misconception most people have. The same as Hades ≠ the Devil, as in evil. Hades rules death, aka the underworld, but that does not mean he is 'all things bad'. Greek Mythology has depth beyond what is right or wrong, as in Zeus (the most common thought leader of the Gods) can be often wrong, and Hades (the common thought antagonist) can be right. They all have their own rule and personality, which most people don't associate with figures within religion today.
(same with Aphrodite being wrongly associated with blind vanity, when in reality she was married by her own will to Hephaestus, who was thrown from Mount Olympus for his deformity, by most accounts)

Aphrodite, from what I can tell, is polyamorous as all hell, but still returns home to her husband at the end of the (proverbial) day. She's love, and she has enough for so, so many people, gods dammit!

Also RE: Hades, a lot of modern fiction portrays him as wanting to take over when he's... Actually perfectly content where he is, where he doesn't have to deal with the antics of his brothers and especially Zeus.

Also high five, fellow believer.

The Hades and Persephone fascination has been a thing since I joined tumblr, which was something like seven years ago. The rest is relatively new, at least in my corner of tumblr.

I don't think I could explain any of it at this point.

Top/bottom stuff is like... not new though. And it's also hugely part of the gay community itself. (I know. I'm in it.)

I think it's fun and harmless and I do it myself. It only crosses lines when you ask actual gay people intimate questions about their sex lives.

Yeah, it's not even new to fandom. Ship wars over what was technically the same ship have been happening in fandom before tumblr. I mean like Sasunaru vs. Narusasu which were considered totally different ships because a different character was topping even though they were the same two characters.

Oh yeah. I remember being at a doujinshi shop in Japan that separated L/Light and Light/L from Death Note into two separate sections, lmao. And fan communities would separate them, too, which was actually helpful because the personalities tended to change somewhat depending on those seme/uke stereotypes.

I mean sure, it's silly, but it's also porn, so why get worked up about it. And as a gay person, I can say top/bottom was NOT invented by fandom, but gay communities themselves. And the stereotyping based on looks/personalities also very much happens. Despite what woke nerds want to believe, many gay people really do identify as tops or bottoms and have strong preferences.

Again, as long as yaoi fans aren't crossing lines in how they interact with actual gay people, I couldn't give two shits if they play the old "top or bottom" game. It's just sex, lighten up.

I know it wasn't invented by fandom. And it's not just the ship war stuff, though the fact that it takes up so much of the discussion in some fandoms makes it annoying to me.

But some of it is like... some user posts a totally nonsexual funny anecdote about a gay family member and his partner, in which the partner acts slightly passive-aggressive. Random poster: relative's boyfriend is a bottom!!

And in fandom, they've started applying it to het pairings, just by making the female half only have sex by using a dildo/strapon on the male half. I've seen someone insist that a character's child must have been adopted, because she could NOT have had sex that wasn't using a dildo/strapon. Strong female characters can't be biological mothers, I guess.

And of course every single f/f couple must be using strapons so the roles can be applied there too.

Totally. I remember someone writing what seemed like a whole goddamn essay about the differences between NaruSasu, and SasuNaru. They were pretty concrete with how the 'two' parings showcased different aspects of their personalities. I think of it whenever I see a new paring that shifts the characters so drastically between them being top/bottom. I hate it as much as I love it I have to say.

isn't the point of fandom is to be a place for it to be OK to be obsessed with Greek mythology? bless their little hearts

(honestly yeah. I've had conversations about how how ridiculous it would be irl to admit I believe in Greek Mythology more than I ever could Christianity. Like how it being commonly recalled as mythology makes the belief lesser than any one we believe in today)

Greek mythology is probably popular because of Percy Jackson, which is also popular on tumblr and not that strangely, since it's popular outside of tumblr also and has canon LGBT characters.

LGBT character URLs are just a tumblr thing, but lesbian character URLs in particular have become a TERF thing.

I'm sure Percy Jackson is part of the popularity of Greek mythology but I'm also pretty sure it goes beyond that

Greek mythology is just a thing people like

Hades/Persephone has been A Thing in the Hellenic mythology fandom for a good long time.

(I do wonder if part of it is the adorable (but, erm, sort of OOC) fanart that Stjepan Šejić's partner nebezial[-asheri, I think, is the tumblr name?] has been doing for a while.)

Hadestown is a newish musical, aka been around for a number of years but has only reached Broadway status recently. It features the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, but mainly in a not so copyright way, reflects their relationship in parallel to Hades and Persephone's. It's become fairly popular, (rightfully won a number of Tony's and the such) and I'm guessing some of the trend originated from that. (There is some non-intentional references to building a wall/excitable speeches by the creators for fair treatment/etc...)
I'm guessing that is where the greek mythology is coming in, but I might be wrong.

Also, I don't think top/bottom, seme/uke ever went away.
