What little rivalry exist was apparently mostly in Leopold's head. Salieri was trained and recognized by his contemporaries as a Viennese and German composer. While he competed with Mozart for jobs, they were friendly enough to regularly attend operas together. After Mozart's death, Salieri organized memorial performances, and retired on his own terms to teach the next generation of German composers, (including Beethoven).

Salieri's reputation as anti-Mozart and anti-German in general was largely a fabrication of nationalist authors after his death.
