Re: Inapropriate costume

I mean... by definition, yes? "Out of costume" doesn't mean "wear another themed costume", it just means regular clothes. If someone went to Ren fest dressed as an Imperial Stormtrooper, it might be amusing, but it wouldn't be appropriate as that's not the theme. I'd assume such a person was a bit of an attention-seeker and maybe kind of bad at reading the room for doing that instead of going to a con.

Yeah, I've seen discussion about that. Apparently people DO go to Ren fests dressed as stormtroopers, Dr Who, and other non-historical characters.

Last time I went to one, there were a few Steampunk people around, too.

Of course, there are also a lot of historical types that don't fit the period, like vikings, as well as fantasy stuff like fairies and unicorns.

Nayrt
There's also a lot of Star Trek characters, based on Star Trek episodes that took place in medieval or medieval inspired places(?). Although there was a strong increase of those after a Big Bang Theory episode where Sheldon went to a RenFaire dressed as a Star Trek character (with the same reason).

I personally don't mind it because unless you're someone who handweaves and stitches all your clothes yourself, you don't really have grounds to complain about historical accuracy (and in general, medieval=/= Renaissance anyway so even medieval costumes are kinda historically incorrect at Renfaires).

However, I've encountered a suspicious amount of people who dress up as time traveler/SciFi characters on Faires who are weirdly smug about it and act like they're mocking the medieval/Renaissance costumed people and that's just... really dumb.
