See, I used to think that too, until one particularly nasty fandom ship war pushed me to seek out more quiet havens that happened to include a lot of rarepair shipping. My mind was opened once I read a number of their unique fics.

Granted, I don't know what you mean by "making up shit," but I've seen a lot of examples of fans choosing to take liberties with canon that pay off rather well or have me reconsider things I'd never even thought about. Canon is not the end all, be all, especially in situations like, say, Game of Thrones where the executives threw a season-long tantrum because they couldn't be let out of their contract. If I were deep into that fandom, I'd say the hell with canon, too.
