In the end, it's writers not being able to write properly- if it's confusing, that's the main cause, not the readers being dumb. So yeah, if someone absolutely wants to include NB pronouns in their writing, they better learn how to write them first and not bitch at their readers for not understanding who's who when in reality, it's down to bad writing.
