IA. It's especially bad with 40K b/c it feels like the fandom has pretty much warped the entire franchise around those guys' tastes. I think you're pretty much right on, though.

It's a pity, really. The dystopian and comically overpowered and scaled nature of Warhammer 40k is appealing and I'd love to play it, but the figures are criminally expensive, and the parts of the fandom that believe the fascist and theocratic cult of personality would be an ideal world are terrifying.

If you really enjoy a fandom with that sort of landscape, you just can't ever reveal that you are female (e.g., and don't ever join a Discord with a voice channel.)

That allows you to exist in the fandom but it doesn't change the reality of what the fandom is

Fair point, but changing other people's behavior is nearly impossible in most contexts.

If you like a canon enough, you have to decide if strapping on blinders and staying under the radar is worth the enjoyment you can eke out in a toxic fandom.

Right, but... like, it's hard to eke enjoyment out of a fandom where you feel constantly on-guard or forced to think about the creepiness of the other people around you.

What 40k could use is, like... a separate fandom space FOR marginalized fans looking to avoid the creepy dudebros that I think a lot of male fans who aren't like that don't NOTICE.

It's a shame as well because I find the lore of the games really interesting, but after attempting to look at some fan-forums for it many years ago I gave up because a majority of the fans were... not ones I wanted to engage with on any level.

Hell it was bad enough interacting with some of the players irl. (Not all of them were bad but, yeah, I've got a few memories that will stick with me).

In the grim darkness of the 40K fandom, there are only creeps...

I know several people IRL who play Warhammer/40K, and they are all pretty normal people. I've never been onto any of the online fansites for it, but I've heard that they're full of white supremacists which is a shame.

Being female myself, I guess I'm just lucky that I have people to play with who aren't creeps.

It's called Feminist 40k. It exists and it's awesome. Look it up.
