Horror Fics

Horror is a rare genre for fanfics. Do you read them? Do you have any favorites?

Lovecraftian/Eldrich AUs mostly. Don't have any specific favorites, but I've come across an occasional fic in the Toklien fandom where Maia and Vala and even elves have eldrich forms.

Elves are usually not nice in German stories

Very true. And Tolkien did take some inspiration from those stories. And it is true that for the Ainur (Maia and Valar), they are mostly spirits with bodies mostly things they take on as they choose. So it could make sense for their spirit forms to take on other forms that might be more disturbing to humans. Elves too are more spirit than humans are.

I've read some ghost story type ones but that's as far as it goes, not really out-and-out horror. But I'm not really a fan of out-and-out horror in the first place.

I strongly prefer psychological horror. Gore doesn't interest me at all.

Mint In Box [Avengers] https://archiveofourown.org/works/543836 But the longer Steve spends in Coulson's hands, the more foxing appears.

There Goes (The Nieghborhood) [Star Trek] https://archiveofourown.org/works/72924 It's a virus. Or something.

The Scratch In the Darkness [Supernatural] https://prophetesss.livejournal.com/1661.html Angels have very little to fear except from each other. But that's only because the only predator higher on the food chain has been dormant for millennia. Now, with angels returning to earth and meddling extensively in the affairs of humans, this monstrous aberration has awoken, and it is hungry. It is hungry, and one angel, just one, is all alone...

Comandante [Supernatural] https://zempasuchil.livejournal.com/240352.html#cutid1 Castiel is the Che Guevara of Heaven, inspiring a new movement in heaven following the events of 5x22. He has some revolutionary ideas about how to reform the place.

Antigonish [Sherlock] https://archiveofourown.org/series/48546 John met a man that wasn't there. He wasn't there today. He wish and wish he'd go away.

Death Rattles [Supernatural, Dean/Cas] https://archiveofourown.org/works/16445948/chapters/38510204 Castiel and Dean travel to an abandoned Men of Letters chapter house to catalogue the books in its library. Castiel comes to believe the house is haunted.

Thin Man [The Hobbit] https://archiveofourown.org/works/699309 Slender Man follows the Company while they're travelling through the Mirkwood.

I tried writing one and it was received so poorly I never tried again :( It was a Silent Hill-esque cult horror + buddy cop dynamics and I thought... it was good? But good god, it was like dropping a rock in a bottomless pit. Just NOTHING.

Okay, so, short answer is 'no', because I am a big baby who hates horror right down to my bones - but! There is a Harry Potter fic on AO3, called *searches* "Harry Potter and the Problem of Potions". It's super long, but really good, but my POINT!
There is a bit where, due to people doing things differently and learning different stuff, blah blah blah, Harry Potter is having some real nasty psychic leakage from Voldemort. It's real bad. And one evening he's sitting in Snape's study, watching him brew, and Harry's mouth opens and words come out, and after a moment Harry realises that Voldemort just straight-up spoke through his mouth. Harry was feeling what Voldemort was feeling, and Voldemort spoke through his mouth, and he didn't even realise straight away.
The creeping horror in that one scene was brilliant, spine-tingling, and I would very much like not to feel that again any time soon.
