Re: Weekend Plans?

I hope you feel better soon and the mittens turn out well.

I’m recovering from my first ever official week of full time employment. I’ve worked 39 1/2 hours in a week before, but I wasn’t benefitted at the time. Since my actual(ly super far away) work location is still closed for renovations, I got to work at two locations closer to home (I take public transit), so it wasn’t that bad.

I have to have another solo try at putting up a predator-proof wire mesh roof on the chicken run; my aunt had volunteered her brother to help, but when he saw how big a space it was (24’x14’ with a 7’x8” dogleg) and that there’re three fuckoff huge trees to work around, he bowed out, so now it’s back to my wimpy, engineering and hand-eye coordination-challenged lonesome to put a lid on the run before the code inspector comes by next Friday. I hope he doesn’t actually laugh (or start writing citations or something) when he sees the almost certainly awful job I’m gonna do.

Thank you. :)

Congrats on the full time employment! I find it really cool that where you live requires inspections for animal habitats!

Yeah, I’m happy about the job. Not so happy about the inspection; it wasn’t required, my new neighbors called it in because one of my hens free ranged a bit too far and got into their yard somehow. She’s my only bantam (like a toy dog breed) hen and can squeeze through tiny gaps in fencing.

My hens have a large run, as well as a big coop. They get shut safely in the predator-proof coop at night, when the only predators who pose a threat to chickens in my area (raccoons, possums, maybe skunks although I haven’t seen—or smelled—one in years) are out and about. The run is just to keep them contained during the day when I’m not home, and I was home, letting them have the run of the back yard, on the day my bantam popped through the neighbor’s fence. Since the inspector came, they’ve been confined fo their run and coop.

I do think animal welfare checks in abuse/hoarding cases are necessary, but the guy coming next week is a zoning inspector, not from animal control or anything like that. In fact, he had to run photos of my setup past “the chicken guy” at his work, because he generally doesn’t deal with animals at all. “Chicken guy’s” only order was that I put a top on the run to keep cats, hawks, etc out.

Which... the only time I’ve ever seen cats in the run was at night, hunting mice; they’re scared to go in the coop/near the hens during the day. And I freaked out the only time I saw a hawk in the coop until I realized it was drinking from the hens’ water dish while the hens yelled at it.

I won’t have the money to hire someone to fix the run for at least a month, and I have no skill to do it myself and can’t drive to the hardware store, so I’m limited in what supplies I can use. Oh well, I’ll figure something out.
