I think you're correct about how 2001 and The Shining movies relate to the original books. There are a lot of other examples in his work, some of which I haven't seen - he really did a lot of adaptations in his career. I guess Clockwork Orange is sort of a counterexample, in that it's a very faithful adaptation of the version of the book that Kubrick was adapting from. Can't really comment on Barry Lyndon, The Killing, Paths of Glory, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, Spartacus or Lolita because I either haven't read the book, haven't seen the movie, or both for those.

But I also think adaptations should be judged mostly on their own merits, and I think his versions of The Shining and 2001 are very good movies in their own right, so it just doesn't bother me that much. Also, Barry Lyndon rules. I just wanted to say that cause I really like that movie.

I agree for 2001. I just can't with the Shining, though. The whole alcoholic descent is such an important part of the plot, and his Jack is an abusive jerk from the start. There is no nuance, no character development. I just don't like his Shining.
