This doesn't seem right, but I don't recall enough of the play to dispute it. Also, rather than ignoring the racism and playing it off as 'faux' racism, wouldn't it be more appropriate to appreciate the source and acknowledge it for what it is?
That way the play doesn't lose any of the meaning it tries to inflect, but there's a more modern acceptance to the ways things were seen, and how that isn't okay anymore?

You mean... play it completely straight and tell people, "No, it's fine, we're totally recontexualising this racist minstrel show"?
