[Outlander]

That had me yelling "NO!" at the screen, instantaneously. And the clothes are far too smart. Clothes rationing had been a thing since June 1941. I think they might have managed a motor-cycle and side-car, in the style of Wallace and Gromit, but nothing bigger. The road was far too well-made, too.

Then I wondered if they're supposed to be shady, Flash-Harry type characters, and that's where they got the car and the clothes. But I didn't wonder long. I made it to the end of the first episode and gave up. It was a real mess.

The time travel, oddly enough, didn't bother me at all.

To me this feels like such a minor nitpick as to be immaterial. Not saying everyone ought to feel that way, but personally, yeah. I just DGAF about something this minor. Especially since it's not even present in or relevant to the plot going forwards.

It's not really minor though. It's piss poor research by the author.

I mean sure, it can be that. Still very minor though. One does not preclude the other.

black market? if you sieve the red dyed petrol through a loaf of bread (which you can get as much of as you are willing to pay), it comes out clear -- thus defeating the police/military checks and rationing.

I know nothing about this show, but this was my first thought too.

It's not like much else was in any way historically accurate in this dumpster fire either.

I try not to let historical inaccuracy bother me too much when it's something that is essentially indulging a fantasy but this comment is one of many reasons I've never bothered with the show.

Unfortunately I live in Scotland AND work for a company who looks after a major visitor attraction so sometimes it feels like basically every third person I speak to day to day will ask me about Outlander. Yes it has been good for the tourist sector here, but no I don't watch it and have no intention of watching it. People really seem to be confused about you being Scottish/in Scotland and having never watched this thing.

OMG I feel for you. It's an American version of the '45 written by someone who didn't bother with the research. Everything is going to feel slightly off (the Highland apricot harvest in the middle of the Little Ice Age, lol.) To anyone who cares about their own history that's got to be pin-prick after pin-prick. It threw me out of the story straightaway because I knew she wouldn't care about getting anything right.

That's what I thought when I read the secret too.

I thought that it was meant to indicate that Frank was a bit shady and also that they didn't know each other very well anymore, after their wartime service spent apart.
