I love skill-based reality shows, but it really wrecks it for me when there's blatant favoritism. (It's okay if the judges have different faves and argue about it though.)

I agree that the judges often have favorites. I felt in early seasons favorites shifted, though. Like people they had said they thought would make it to the top fell out of favor as the competition went on. The past couple of seasons it has been so condensed and so short that this hasn't really had a chance to happen. I'm glad the show is still airing, as some of the dancing is amazing, but I miss the longer seasons.

Absolutely, when a contemporary dancer does bad in a different category they can't stop with the excuses of it being 'out of their style' and whatnot. They'll give a popper smooth hiphop (aka contemporary with less flailing) and kick them out because they can't even pick up choreography in their own style, when it's nothing like what they do normally.
They pick a frontrunner so early on, and it basically doesn't matter how they preform after that. It's always a young underdressed contemporary girl Nigel can leer at and make inappropriate comments about.
