I never read it as a kid and neither did most of my friends at the time, it was kind of looked down on as something our mothers read when they were kids and therefore too "old".

Seconding this. I remember my mom (who isn't even much of a reader) wanted me to read it when I was eleven or twelve, and in my head I was like, "Are you kidding? It's long, it's ancient, it looks boring af - why would I want to read this?"
